MEDITATION Carl Skorepa

“You want me to do, what?”

When Moses was leading the Israelites out of Egypt and they were thirsty, so Moses cried out to the Lord asking what to do. . . .“ and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water, You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beast drink. So Moses took the rod from before the Lord, just as He commanded him; . .Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly. . ” (Numbers 20: 7-11).

You can imagine that Moses was thinking; “you want me to, what?”

When Joshua was told to circle the walls of Jericho for seven days and then blow trumpets to knock down the walls you can speculate what Joshua wanted to say; “you want me to do, what?”

When Jesus told His disciples to sell all their possession they probably thought, “you want me to do, what?”

These and other requests certainly seem absurd from our perspective. Yet perhaps recently you heard God’s calling and it seems as absurd as talking to a rock to get water and you are thinking; “you want me to, what?”

Remember “’For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8). If, the Lord is calling you to do something absurd, follow Paul’s example:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

BILOXI NEEDS YOU!

C’mon Ya’ll! There’s much work to be done for the folks around Biloxi and with our UCC Team at Back Bay Mission. We missed last spring due to several “make all the connections” problems, but this coming spring is lined up and ready to go! We can use all the help we can get! Don’t worry if you are not a pro painter, carpenter, electrician, or whatever. We have lots of work that needs to be accomplished and all any of it takes is a willing “Servant’s Heart!”

We will stay at Seashore Methodist Assembly right on the Gulf beaches with room and meals included the week of March 31 to April 7, 2012. Yes, we will be home for Easter!

So, contact Dave Weber as soon as you can for details: 330-725-8545 or radweb70@zoominternet.net

PS – Yes “unfortunately,” we will just have to take a day touring New Orleans and sampling some of that yummy Southern fare!!!

THE ENDOWMENT TEAM ASKS FOR:

A HEART FOR GIVING… SO OUR CHURCH KEEPS LIVING

The Patchwork of Our Lives

The members of this church family are in many ways like a warm, patchwork quilt. We are all different, but we are joined or “patched together” to form a lovely entity that is larger than each individual patch. We make a great Christian design of believers! The Endowment Fund serves to promote this faith quilt.

Did you know that there are many ways that you can contribute to the Endowment Fund of our Church? A true way to honor a family member’s love is to give a cash donation to the Endowment Fund to honor their birthday, anniversary, retirement, etc.

Cash Donation gifts may be made by cash or check made payable to the UCC-Congregational. Please mark Endowment Fund on the memo line. This is a lasting gift that assures that the love you share in your family can be reflected in the love we share for the future of our church.

NEW MEMBER CLASSES

Would you like to become a member of our church family? Join us for our new member classes that begin today, January 22nd.

QUILTER’S DELIGHT—

One of the most delightful small ministries of our church is the Quilters Group. Every Wednesday morning, a cluster of women-friends equipped with needles, scissors and lots of energy gather to quilt. Using one of the downstairs room, Sharon Domchick, Ginny Hall, Lois Tampson, Edie Larsen, Jean Soper and Carolee Rafn meet to sew, chatter, design, laugh, select colors of thread and enjoy the serenity that quilting provides to any seamstress. The talented women bring years of experience with fabric and thread, yet a beginner is welcomed with smiles and encouragement. Talented hands make the work go quickly, although it takes almost a calendar year to complete one quilt. The group has decided to donate the proceeds of their needlework to various initiatives throughout the church such as MUSIC UNDER THE STARS and youth efforts. They have been especially generous to the Endowment Fund. Quilts are accepted from church members and friends from within the community. This is a loving and open group of sewing friends who welcome any new person to join them—don’t worry, they will teach you how to make fine stitches! See you there!

Calling all High School Youth and Parents

*The dates of the trip are Monday July 23 –Sunday July 29, 2012.

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE

We are very close to winding up our annual Stewardship campaign. To date, we have pledges totaling $398,928.31, a 2.3% increase when comparing amounts on pledge cards returned this year over amounts on cards returned last year, a great effort! Even better, amounts allocated towards the Operating, Mission and Capital budgets all increased over last year. God is good! However, we’re still short on our campaign by about $25,000 as we have not heard from 24 families who pledged last year, but have not turned in cards yet for this year. To ensure that a balanced, fully funded budget is presented to the congregation at our annual meeting on 2/5, we need all cards turned in this week to accurately finalize expected revenues.

We deeply appreciate everyone’s support this year!

MEDITATION Carl Skorepa

The short prefix “re” according to the dictionary means: “return to a previous condition or position” or “repetition of a previous position.” Over the years I have gradually become aware that God’s character and relationship with us involves many “re” attributes. For example:

Redeem (“to set free; to rescue; to ransom”) Psalm 49:15: “But as for me, God will redeem my soul from the power of death, for he will receive me.”

Reconciled (“to settle or resolve a dispute”) II Corinthians 5:19: “namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”

Release: (“to free, unfasten, or let go of”) Revelation 1:5: “To Him (Christ) who loves us, released us from our sins by His blood.”

Renew: (“to make new, to replenish, to start over”) Titus 3:5: “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

Restore: (“to put someone back to normal position”) Psalm 23:3: “He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”

As we travel through our life journey with Christ we need to realize that God’s patience towards us involves many repetitions, reminders, and repeats that draw us back to a proper relationship with Christ.

Some additional inspiration from God’s word: Psalm 51:10; Galatians 6:9; Romans 12:12; and James 1:12.

The Fund is professionally managed by the United Church Foundation in New York.

It is hoped that the assets of the Fund will ensure the continuation of the life of our church on the square.

MEDITATION Carl Skorepa

Teaching technical theatre at college is a privilege and blessing from God in my life. As I start a new term I will be teaching students to operate a radial arm saw, a chop saw, and the ever dangerous table saw. I start my lesson on these power tools by showing them my ten fingers and asking them to show me their ten fingers. I jokingly add: “You will fail this course if you finish with less than ten fingers.”

After putting on safety goggles and ear protection, I explain the numerous steps involved in operating these saws. Safety components are woven into the various steps. Inevitably, prior to actually operating the saws someone shares how they are scared. My response is: “Good!!! Because after working in technical theater full time for 15 years I still fear these tools. Once you become too comfortable and lose your fear you greatly increase your chances of getting hurt.”

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,” (Proverbs 9:10). Having a healthy fear of the Lord, like a healthy fear of saws, will protect us and gain us wisdom. In our walk with Christ we often become too comfortable with our faith and lose our fear of the Lord. These “comfortable” periods cause us to relying on own wisdom and strength thus increasing our chances of getting hurt. “Lean not on your own understanding. In all ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight,” (Proverbs 3:5).

Here are some verses from God’s word that give us a healthy fear of the Lord as we saw through life:

Psalm 2:11; Psalm 5:7; Proverbs 10:27; Proverbs 14:27; Proverbs 15:16; and Hebrews 12:28-29.

MEDITATION

The Magic of Love

Love is like magic
And it always will be,
For Love still remains
Life’s sweet mystery.

Love works in ways
That are wonderous and strange
And there’s nothing in life
That Love cannot change

Love can transform
The most common place
Into beauty and splendour
And sweetness and grace

Love is unselfish,
Understanding and kind,
For it sees with the heart
And not with the mind.

Love is the answer
That everyone seeks
Love is the language
That every heart speaks
Love is the message
That was sent to the earth
On that first Holy Christmas
That heralded Christ’s birth!

For more information, contact Jeannine Murray through the Church Office.

CHRISTMAS OFFERING

The annual Christmas Offering will be collected on December 18th and will once again be split between two organizations in great need of our support this holiday season, the Veterans of the Cross/Emergency Fund and Medina Community Services.

There is a 108 year tradition of collecting funds from UCC churches all across the country for the Veterans of the Cross and Emergency Funds. Last year the Pension Boards’ Ministerial Assistance program was able to provide $1,504,420 to lower income ministerial individuals and families in need because of the generous giving from church members. Gifts to the Christmas Fund will help those that have given their lives to the service of the church in days gone by and to those who are currently serving the church.

The Medina Community Services Center assists local families in need with food, clothing, household items and holiday food baskets. As the economy continues to flounder, there are increased numbers of Medina County residents seeking aid from Community Services.

Please consider giving generously to these two very worthwhile organizations this Christmas.

SERVICE OF REMEMBERING JANUARY 1st, 2012

One service only 10:30 am

On the first Sunday of the year we will remember those persons who have passed away this past year. By having the time of remembrance during a worship service, we encourage family members and others to come and share this time together. During the worship service, the names of the members of Medina UCC who have passed away during 2011 will be read. For each member a candle will be lighted and a chime will ring.

We would also like to read the names of family members and loved ones who have passed away during this past year. If you have a loved one you would like remembered, please call the Church Office no later than December 27th with the full name of the loved one, their relationship to you, and the day of their passing.

SING JOY!

A holiday concert, “SING JOY!” will take place Sunday, December 18, at 4 pm at Trinity United Church of Christ, 215 High Street, Wadsworth. (Free-will offering.) Daniel Doty, tenor, the featured artist (and also pastor of the church), will present holiday music both old and new. From cherished classics such as “A Cradle in Bethlehem,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and “There’s No Christmas Like a Home Christmas,” to modern hits such as “Believe” (from Polar Express) and “God Bless Us Everyone” (from Disney’s A Christmas Carol) there is sure to be something on the program for everyone. There might even be a time for everyone to join in the holiday singing!

MEDITATION Carol Wilcox

“Health in Three Dimensions”

“Health and well-being have three dimensions: (1) the vertical, our relationship with God; (2) the internal, those inward qualities of character such as peace, joy, patience and self- control; and (3) the horizontal, our relationships with others, which call for qualities such as love, kindness, and compassion.

Neglecting any of the three can be damaging to us. Yet, often we tend to focus on one dimension to the neglect of the other two. The greatest commandment – to love God, to love ourselves, and to love our neighbors – places the vertical (loving God), the loving God the internal (loving oneself), and the horizontal (loving our neighbors in healthy balance.”

So writes Daniel C. Arichea of “The Upper Room:”

I was not musing on these thoughts when I was diagnosed with two medical problems. Knocked to my knees, I began to pray to God for strength and answers to what was happening to me. He didn’t give me the answers I craved, but I did experience a certain peace, patience and, gradually, some understanding of what is going on. I have felt great caring from many compassionate people, which has cemented our relationships.

I am truly blessed!

All donations are needed by December 11th so they can be distributed for Christmas. Please DO NOT wrap your donations. Help share the true meaning of Christmas with those in need in our area this holiday season.

THANK YOU EVERYONE

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Operation Christmas Child in any way this year. With all the donations we received from the congregation we collected 96 fun-filled shoe boxes. Thank you to the elementary youth group who put together a lot of the boxes.

Thank you to the Mission Team who provided funds to help with the shipping of the boxes.

Thanks to all of you there will be many smiles on the faces of hurting children worldwide.

Thank you again to everyone and God Bless You.

The Discipleship and Education Team would like to thank everyone who made the yummy treats for our bake sale. Everything looked delicious.

Thank you also to everyone who helped setup, worked the bake sale, and cleaned up. Thanks to the efforts of everyone we were able to raise $491.00 for the CE and Youth Programs.

Thank you again. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help.

BILOXI NEEDS YOU!

C’mon Ya’ll! There’s much work to be down for the folks around Biloxi and with our UCC Team at Back Bay Mission.

NOTICE FOR 50 + MEMBERS

Group photos taken at the September 50+ Members Luncheon have been distributed. If you would like a list of those in the photo (in order of where they are standing), you can take one from the bulletin board across from the Sacristy.

WOMEN’S BOOK GROUP

The Women’s Book Group will meet on Tuesday, December 13, at 6:30 pm at Rustic Hills Country Club to discuss The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. All are welcome. Questions? Please RSVP to Stephanie Manhoff at 723-1883.

MISSION TRIP MEETING FOR

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH AND PARENTS

This spring, the Middle School Youth Group will be embarking on our own mission trip to the Hiram Farm Living and Learning Community. This trip will feature a variety of service opportunities, such as caring for farm animals, gardening, and doing repair work. We will also be learning about Autism Spectrum Disorder, as this farm is operated by individuals with ASD.

All middle school youth and parents are encouraged to come to an informational meeting to be held during Youth Group on Sunday December 4 from 6:15 pm until 7 pm.

Please bring your questions and concerns, your energy and enthusiasm. See you on Sunday December 4!

If you are interested in participating in the mission trip but you are unable to attend this meeting, please contact Kevin Swantek, Beth Starling, or Pastor Mariah.

RECONCILIATION TEAM

Come December 15 at 7:00 pm

to refresh and plan for 2012

This past year, Gene Kraus, facilitator of the Reconciliation Team, has presented workshops designed to help understand the styles and mechanics which are meaningful to successful reconciliation.

You are invited to attend the next meeting on Thursday, December 15, in the Library, at 7 pm to re-examine the direction and methods of the Reconciliation Team for the coming year, 2012.

Building on the solid base of understanding reconciliation processes, where do we want this team to direct its energies next? Do we want to re-examine the 15 mandates assigned in the By-Laws? What activities will meet the mandates?

You are welcome to come and take part in the discussion or write your ideas down and send them to the Church Office.

OCTOBER 9TH VIDEO

NOW AVAILABLE!

There are now three copies of this service available in the sacristy to be checked out. This is the service containing the anthem “How Beautiful” that our choir and bell choirs did so wonderfully. Please be sure that when you check out a disc that you include the date of the disc and the date checked out (and when returned).

WE ARE BLESSED!

Stewardship Update

Our annual Stewardship Campaign is rapidly coming to a close. As of November 28:

> Total pledges to the campaign are $390,688 – up almost $6,100 over what was raised at this point in the campaign last year.

> To date, we’ve heard from 187 families this year, down 5 from this point in the campaign last year.

> This year’s average pledge is $2,089, up slightly from last year.

> This is great news! In order to complete this year’s campaign, we’re still hoping to hear from another 40 families with the hope of raising an additional $55,000 to fully fund our church for 2012.

Please continue to keep our church and this campaign in your prayers over the next few weeks. If you have not returned your pledge card yet, we hope to hear from you soon! If you are in need of an additional pledge card, they are available in the pew racks or by calling the Church Office.

ANNUAL REPORTS DUE SOON!

If you are a Team/Committee Leader, a Moderator or are on staff, please start thinking about your Annual Reports. Letters have been mailed to your home. With the office being closed the day after Christmas, they are due on Tuesday, Dec. 27th.

“Bread for the Soul”

“There’s nothing quite as homey as the smell of baking bread” a contributor to Guidepost Magazine writes. A reader of the magazine notes, “I pray for others while kneading the dough. What a way to nourish body and soul!

My husband and I have received so many blessings from our church friends during my medical problems. One day a big loaf of warm, freshly made bread arrived at our door, and it really lifted our spirits. It was from the church’s Breadmakers, nourishing both our bodies and spirits. Then, a second delicious loaf arrived. The following is the accompanying note;

This loaf of bread is not just a gift of food, but

A reminder that the Christ in whom we trust called

Himself, “the Bread of Life.” We who believe in Him

are fed spiritually, even in difficult times. May that knowledge sustain you in these days.

In the Peace of Christ,

The Breadmakers of the Medina UCC

Then my daughter-in-law’s mother’s church ladies sent me a beautiful crocheted shawl. Like the bread, it gave me warm comfort as I wrapped it around my shoulders, lifting my spirits during this trying time.

Our church has a Quilting Group, who turns out lovely, warm quilts.

God bless the stitchers and bakers. What true ministries of God’s love!

MISSION: 1 – THE RESULTS!

The Campaign has ended and we MET OUR GOALS!!!

The cash donations totaled over $2,100.00. We collected over 600 food items and many letters were written to Congress.

The cash donations were sent to UCC National for equal distribution between “Neighbors In Need” hunger relief and East Africa Famine Relief. The food items were divided equally between the Medina Community Services Center, the Medina Methodist Food Pantry, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Farmer’s Market. Due to the great need for hunger relief in our local area, the Mission Team is also giving each of these Medina food banks $500 from the Local Mission Fund.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

CHRIST TREE

The Christ Tree is now up outside the Sacristy. Please consider taking an ornament from the tree and purchasing the item found on the back of it. Bring your item back to church and place it under the tree. These items will be distributed to Community Services, The Food Pantry at the Methodist Church, and the Make A Difference Program. All donations are needed by December 11th so they can be distributed for Christmas.

Please DO NOT wrap your donations. Help share the true meaning of Christmas with those in need in our area this holiday season.

“WAITING ON GOD” IN THE GATHERING

“Thank you for waiting. Your call is important to us.”

Words of waiting can try our patience and bring us challenge. This Advent, you don’t have to wait alone! Join the Gathering for our worship series, Waiting on God, and discover how waiting can be holy work. On November 20, worshippers will be invited to write down a memory of a personal experience with waiting. Then, each week during Advent, the bulletin and slides will feature a selection of these memories, that we might give each other courage and hope in our waiting.

Bring your anticipation, and join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am for a service of worship and waiting.

CHANCEL CHOIR

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Puccini Magnificat

On Sunday, December 4, at the 10:30 service, the Chancel Choir, assisted by strings and organ, will perform Giacomo Puccini’s “Magnificat.” This is not written by the famous opera composer, but by his grandfather. It is a delightful, short, Early Baroque piece based on the famous declaration that Mary makes to Elizabeth about being blessed to carry the baby Jesus in her womb, which is found in Luke 1:46-55.

The choir hopes that you will join us that day to hear this story both in scripture and music as we prepare for the celebration of the Birth of Jesus on Christmas.

      SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGERS

“Thanks – Giving Prayers”

Dear Lord, I’m just learning about you.

I like the church. The people are nice but

they say we should be thankful to You.

How can I be thankful when Mommy’s not here?

I miss my Mommy.

If I tell You I am thankful, will you

bring Mommy to me?

Oh, God, I’m trying so hard to get a good job.

I do thank you for that interview. It went well!

The librarian gave me such good clothes–Awesome!

My little boy tries hard to be brave.

I’ve never lost a job before.

Help me take care of us. Oh, God!

It’s almost Thanksgiving, Lord. Time goes so fast!

We’re all here and accounted for. The grandkids

are doing fine in school, the kids have jobs,

and we’ve had enough to share.

Sometimes it was just a kind, encouraging word,

but maybe that’s the best of all.

We are grateful…

November 1 – 11, 2011
Please don’t forget to bring in cans of vegetables and stuffing mixes. Place them in the food boxes by the entrances marked “Mission: 1”. Read your bulletin insert and use the pew envelopes for making your cash donations. The displays in the East Room and Fellowship Hall will be showing our progress for this hunger relief project.
Consider writing a letter to Congress asking that they consider improvement in assistance in serving the world’s poorest people.
Remember that the Evangelism Team would like to have “EACH 1 BRING 1” on November 6. Also, ask the friend you bring to donate a canned good for this campaign.

PLEASE BE GENEROUS IN THIS PROJECT TO AID HUNGER RELIEF!
THANK YOU!
Thank you to everyone that has returned their 2012 Faith Offering card. Cards are still being collected. Look for an update next week.\

High School Youth Group Sponsor Tea
A resounding word of thanks to everyone who signed up to serve as a High School Youth Group Sponsor for 2011-2012! friends for the Medina UCC by making a visit and delivering a pumpkin door hanger made by the Craft Group. Each door hanger has the name, address and phone number of the person to visit on the back. Please call the person and make visiting arrangements.
Pumpkin door hangers are displayed in the East Room. For more information, Call Syd Benson 330-725-5540

Along with the cost, each youth will need a signed permission slip in order to participate. If you have questions or if you need a permission slip, please see Beth Starling, Kevin Swantek, or Pastor Mariah.

CIRCLE OF CARING
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
Boxes Due Sunday, November 20
Thank you to everyone who donated items for Operation Christmas Child. The elementary youth group assembled 40 boxes to give to children around the world. Thank you for your support. There is still time to fill a shoe box as a family too. Completed boxes do not need to be ready until November. There are shoe boxes located in the hall outside of fellowship hall along with ideas of what you can put in the boxes. Plastic shoe boxes also work great and you can find them cheap at most stores. So, take/get a shoe box, fill it with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, candy and an assortment of other gifts and bring a smile to the face of hurting children worldwide. Please see the Operation Christmas Child table in the hallway for more information. If you have any questions, please contact Stacie Yates (330)723-7344 or yatesmsla@zoominternet.net. Will you help us take God’s love to hurting children around the world? We hope you will.
YOUTH GROUP RAKE-N-RUN
On Sunday November 6 the youth groups will launch our annual Rake n Run! We will meet at the church at 1:30 and split into teams to travel around Medina raking the yards of church members who are in need of this extra assistance. Afterwards, we’ll meet back at the church for cookies and hot chocolate. We will be finished by 5:00.
Please bring a rake to use as well as any tarps or leaf blowers you can loan us (labeled with your name). Also, please bring a plate of cookies or dessert to share. We are in need of parent drivers! If you can drive, please contact Mariah at youthpastor@uccmedina.org or (330) 725-4559 ex. 33.
All youth participants need a signed permission slip and emergency medical form. Forms are available electronically from Mariah or on the sign-up tables at the church.
“FOUND AND FORGIVEN”
”Found and Forgiven,” a musical based on the story of the prodigal son, will be presented Saturday, November 5, at 3 pm and 7 pm, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Akron. A spaghetti dinner will be served between shows, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Tickets for the performance and the dinner are available through the EOA/WRA Support Center or at faithmusicals@gmail.com. All proceeds from the day will benefit Akron Urban United Churches of Christ.

Here is an opportunity to get together for pizza, good conversation and an inspirational speaker on “Christian Fellowship.” Men from Second Baptist and First Christian will be joining us in the banquet room at Abbottino’s for food, fellowship and an inspirational speaker on Friday, November 4.(don’t sweat it if you can’t be there on the dot, we’ll save some pizza for you! )
It’s a great chance to renew old friendships and make new ones with men at First Christian and Second Baptist. Dinner includes several choices of pizza, two salad options and a beverage – all for $15, including the gratuity. Why don’t you join us?
RETURNING IN 2012
ADULT/FAMILY FRIENDSHIP TRIP TO COSTA RICA
FEBRUARY 11-21, 2012
For three years now members of our congregation have journeyed to San Jose, Costa Rica, to build simple frame homes for the poorest of the poor. On these trips, in addition to building houses, we have made new friends and learned much about ourselves and others.
We will return to San Jose again next year to work with Maximo and our other friends as we renew our commitment to serving all of God’s people. This trip is open to adults and also to children/youth accompanied by their parents. Our plans in 2012 call for us to go in the winter (think warm) rather than the summer.
Interested? Call (330-725-4559) or email (nealsadler@yahoo.com) Pastor Neal for more information.
“Telling the Truth: the Purpose and Practice of Preaching”
Workshop Saturday November 12
The Sermon. Do you ever wonder what it is all about? What is supposed to happen during this 13-minute event that sits in the middle of Sunday worship? Why is there a sermon, and how does it come to be?
You are invited to bring your questions and your creativity to an interactive workshop at the church on Saturday November 12th 11:00-3:00. (Lunch is included.) This workshop is designed for people of all ages who are interested in the art of preaching –including those of you who have never given a sermon but might like to try and those of you who are seasoned preachers. Come join us as we seek to be the still-speaking people of the still-speaking God! Please sign-up for the workshop outside of Fellowship Hall or in the East Room, or contact Pastor Mariah at youthpastor@uccmedina.org
MEDITATION Cynthia Hankin
ST. FRANCIS’ Prayer

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

Meet Jen Cockrell

Jen Cockrell is one of our new members. She attends the 9:00 service. We would like to share her message that was given a couple of weeks ago, during the service:

Hello, my name is Jen Cockrell. My story started 41 years ago. I was born with cerebral palsy. I took my first breath inside my mother.
I was 18 months old when the doctors told my parents that I had cerebral palsy. Mom new something was wrong. I could not hold my head up or sit up on my own.
For seven years mom put her career on hold until she got me on my feet. Then the day came that mom decided to go back to work. The first Sunday that Mom went back to work, the rest of the family forgot to help me get dressed. They also didn’t feed me. I met mom at the door that night, still in my pajamas and very hungry. It was then that mom and I both knew something had to change. She took me in the kitchen and taught me how to make a sandwich. She was also the one who took me to Metro Hospital where I was taught to dress myself.
In seventh grade I had the same teacher for
all 8 periods. She was breaking down my
spirit, so I decided to do something about it. I asked her if I could go to the library for a book. I went to the library that day, but it was not for a book it was for a job. I got a job that day, and worked in the school library two years in Junior & three years in High School.
Then the time came I graduated from Valley Forge High School in Parma Heights, after being bussed back in to Parma Heights for 14 years. It was now time to call Medina, home, and see what Medina had to offer me.
One day as I was sitting outside reading, it came to me that I should call Brunswick Library to see if they needed volunteers. They took me on as a volunteer. I did that for nine months, then they asked me to join the staff. I have now been on staff at the library for 18 years.
I believe God gave me Cerebral Palsy for a reason. He knew what he was doing, because he knew I could handle it and accept it.
One of my joys in life is taking photography.
MEDITATION Cynthia Hankin

What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Mark 11:24

To pray successfully, you must employ affirmation and visualization. Form a picture in your mind, not of lack or denial or frustration or illness, but of prosperity, abundance, attainment, health. Always remember you will receive as a result of prayer exactly what you think, not what you say. If you pray for
achievement but think defeat, your words are idle because your heart has already accepted defeat. Therefore, practice believing that even as you pray you are receiving God’s boundless blessings, and they will come to you.
