We are called to live our Christian faith daily, loving God growing spiritually and serving others.” Matthew 22:36-39

MEDITATION by Cynthia Hankin

Prayer Casts Out Fear”

One of the greatest enemies of man is fear. Prayer, which is faith in God and all things good, casts out fear. Fear is the cloud that hides the sunshine of God’s Love. Fear causes man to fail. It is fear that makes man angry and jittery, causes him to rub others the wrong way. Fear creates bad human relations. Men fear criticism so much that many of their most beautiful thoughts never see the light of day.

One of the most beautiful and practical prayers in the Bible for the overcoming of fear is this: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1) From “Techniques in prayer therapy” by Dr. Joseph Murphy. Chapter 10

DID YOU KNOW?,,,

That in the late 1990’s, the church was able to provide Christmas and Easter special music by forming a 10-12 piece string ensemble, comprised of church members.  Under the direction of Jane Grienke and Keith Holliday, the chancel area became a concert stage with lovely, orchestral performances.

MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

SPRING ARRIVES WITH EASTER

I have just completed my first winter here in Medina (though with the weather this week I am not certain that winter is over just yet). I expected the snow and the cold of northeast Ohio for I have lived most of my life in similar climates. What I did not expect though, was the endless succession of gray, dreary days.

It appears that sometime in November the sun packs up and leaves this area, refusing to make anything more than a brief visit until March. Even now, it doesn’t seem to want to stay around for very long.

We live for several months in the hope of spring – blue skies, warm breezes, daffodils, green grass and flowering trees. We long for the appearance of new life in the natural world all around.

How often, much of our life seems to be stuck in winter. We endure long dreary, gray days of job loss, or relationship breakups, or chronic illnesses, or uncertain futures. We long for the clouds to disappear and the warm blue skies of spring to make all things better. We sometimes wonder whether it will ever happen.

Then, somehow, from somewhere, spring arrives. Our hope is renewed. Our world is good once again… at least for a while.

In our Christian faith, this hope can be found at all times in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the empty tomb on the first Easter morning, God proclaims that life, new life, eternal life awaits us. God offers the hope of eternal resurrection not only for our lives, but also for the whole world. God desires us all to know the blessings of a God who conquers death and invites us to live amidst God’s holy reign.

May God bless us all as we grow together in faith. Neal R. Sadler, Senior Pastor

EASTER OFFERING

The Easter Offering will again be split between the Richard and Rachael Wolff Fund for Theological Education and the “Friends in Need” fund.
The “Friends in Need” fund provides assistance to members of our own church community with special financial needs related to basic living expenses (i.e. rent/mortgage, utilities, etc.).  This fund was established in 2003 by the World Friendship Board.
The Wolff Fund provides grants to Ohio Conference UCC seminary students wishing to enter the ministry in our denomination. The Fund was established to increase the numbers of pastors in training available to UCC churches.
In our current economic times, giving generously to these funds becomes even more critical.
Thank you for your consideration.

WORLD FRIENDSHIP BOARD’S APRIL SPOTLIGHT MINISTRY

Café 41:11 is a Christian ministry whose purpose is to develop community cafes, creating a safe, neutral environment for cultivating relationships, prayerfully leading people to Christ, and serving as a connection to the local churches and community. It functions strictly on donated time, monetary support, and prayer. Lots of prayer! The Medina Cafe opened in November of 2007 and has been serving our community with free food, friendship and spiritual counsel 5 days a week. What a great meeting place for mentors and their “mentorees”, for doing homework, playing a game of chess, holding prayer or Bible study groups or just plain “chillin”. If you haven’t been by, come inside for some free coffee and see for yourself how God is working in our midst!

How can I help keep this Café ministry going?

-pray!!! Patrons continue to be touched by love and friendship

-volunteer for 1 or 2 three hour shifts per month

-stock the supply shelves with such items as coffee, tea, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, to-go cups with lids, large gum balls, or cleaning supplies

-bake cookies, brownies or cake – everyone loves homemade!

-visit the website for further information – www.cafe4111.info

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself” – Mark 12

EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE

Flowering of the Cross”

The Easter Sunrise Service is being held in the HEATED chapel of Spring Grove Cemetery at 7:00 am Easter Sunday. The cemetery is four blocks east of the church between Weymouth Rd and Washington St (entrance off Spring Grove Rd). The service is an intimate worship experience welcoming the resurrection of the new dawn. Music is being led by Mark Armstrong. All worshippers participate in creating the Flowered Cross. The cross begins stark and empty but comes alive as fresh flowers cover the cross. The flowering of the cross represents the new life and hope that arises from the resurrection. The Flowered Cross will be brought back to the church building and displayed for the later Easter services. Warm beverages and hot-cross buns are being served. This early service is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.

Kids will have a yummy spaghetti meal and then move to the downstairs area for a craft that teaches savings. Called “SOCK IT AWAY”, the youngsters will take a sock, decorate it with fun paints, markers, buttons, stars, lace, and iron-ons, to make a fun alligator, a sponge-bob man, or a creation of their own. This sock becomes a bank! A ribbon tie keeps the coins inside. Kids will learn to save & sock away part of their allowance. Of course, planned workshops for mom and dad will be provided that night. See you there!

DID YOU KNOW?,,,

In pioneer days, the believers of the Congregational Church and the Episcopal Church worshipped together.  They worshipped in a school house until about 1827, when both denominations moved from the Weymouth area to the village of Medina. Courtesy of the Endowment Fund Committee

MEDITATION by Cynthia Hankin

From the “Tibetan Art of Positive Thinking”; by Christopher Hansard.

How do you define what a difficult person is? The Tibetan tradition describes it in this way: a difficult person is someone who throws their emotional energy at you, causing you upset and shock and making you feel defenseless. A difficult person is someone who persecutes you or obstructs your path in life. A difficult person is someone who tries to cause you emotional or physical harm or damage to your reputation. A difficult person is someone who tries to steal your belongings, wealth, or creativity.

Such people can be easy to deal with, but the golden rule is that you should not at any juncture wish them harm. What you must wish them is self-knowledge.”

Praying for them, “may all blessings flow to you. May self-knowledge flow to you. I reclaim the power you have taken from me, it is mine to take back, and it is my right. May love and good fortune come to you now.  You are no longer a problem for me.”

Golden rule:  Treat other people as you would want them to treat you.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to all who made Music Under the Stars so special!

Music under the Stars was a magical, exquisite evening providing a wonderful evening with many memories for the Medina UCC family. Countless hours of preparation went into making the evening special. We extend our thanks to the dozens and dozens of people who made this special time possible. We especially want to recognize those persons who accepted substantial responsibility for the event. Jan Holt (with Tammy Daubner as co-chair)chaired the evening, recruiting helpers and overseeing the countless details. Dottie Edinger directed the Silent Auction that raised considerable funds for our Capital Maintenance needs. The UCC Quilting Group donated a beautiful hand-crafted quilt. Pat Montgomery oversaw the transformation of our church building into an elegant evening under the stars. Chef Eric Whyard prepared another gourmet meal enjoyed by all. Cathy Fafrak assembled a group of remarkable musicians from the UCC family. Thanks also to Holly Fawcett for the professional programs, Tom Usher for photography, Nick North for piano music, Senior High youth for serving, Pete Benson and crew for cleanup, Cindy Farnham for tickets, Matt Yates for technical direction, and many more for their time & effort.

EASTER LILIES

You may donate a lily to be placed on the altar for Easter and claim it afterward or, you may donate a lily to be delivered by the flower committee to a shut-in to be enjoyed before the holiday. Please use the envelope in the pew racks and place it in the offering plate, or call the office and place your order. There are additional envelopes on the table near fellowship hall or in the East Room. The cost for one lily is $8.00.

Deadline for ordering is March 30th.

If there are any questions, please call Cindy in the church office. 330-725-4559.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

Thank you for your generous contributions to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. This effort is part of “Our Church’s Wider Mission” offerings. Our total contributions from last Sunday were $662.00. Thank you for giving with a generous heart.

LENTEN ORGAN RECITAL

Again at this Lenten season, we can enjoy an inspirational organ recital performed by Elaine Brent. If you missed last week’s recital, you still have a chance to come and enjoy some inspirational music of the Lenten season. The last of the 2 recitals is on Friday, April 3 at 12 noon. A light lunch will follow with donations appreciated.

There is a box outside of the office where you can put your donation. MEDITATION – Deb Waldron

FAITH

Loving God, you are faithful to us beyond measure. You forgive and remember not the reason for the forgiveness. Teach us to follow the example you sent in your son Jesus; that we too may share the good news that is written upon our hearts. Amen”

The abundance of God’s love nourishes my faith. Filled with the love of God, I express my gratitude for the goodness of all people. I give thanks for loving friends and colleagues who enfold me with love and support in all situations.

With faith in the perfect outcome, I take every challenge to God in prayer. In the silence, I hear the still small voice within my heart, and my faith is rejuvenated. As I celebrate the experiences that have caused me to call forth greater strength, my deep and abiding faith overflows in every area of my life.

Stepping out in faith, I place my life, my world in God’s care. There is always the potential for accomplishment within me. Just as surely as the

season of new life unfolds, so, too, does my potential to break through any barriers to an accomplishment. My goals then become realities,

revealing the results of my divinely inspired work.

With God, no challenge is too large and no task is too daunting. My faith in God knows no limit.

“And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.”–1 Corinthians 13:2

Music Under the Stars

Black Tie Optional

March 28, 2009

As a part of our unique fundraiser, there will be a musical program provided by accomplished area musicians who volunteer their time and talents for our listening pleasure. Cathy Fafrak, our organist, has accepted the huge challenge of chairing the 2009 Entertainment Program. Working with support from Leonard Machles and Nick North, she has acquired an exceptional group of musicians for this year’s Music Under the Stars. We appreciate Cathy’s musical knowledge in putting this program together.

The Silent Auction committee is committed to making this an All Church fundraiser by selecting several great items for everyone to bid on. They have a group displayed this morning and will be accepting sealed bids to be opened at the close of the auction on March 28th. Please check these out carefully, this will be your only bidding opportunity if you will not be attending Music Under the Stars. Next week the committee will offer a new group for your consideration. Bidding forms need to be filled out accurately. Happy bidding!

You may also purchase raffle tickets for some generously filled baskets. Winning ticket to be drawn at Music Under the Stars, winner does not have to be present.

The beautiful white quilt “Welsh Beauty” has created quite a lot of excitement. Tickets are still available from Tammy Daubner or in the church office. Fliers with a picture of the quilt are also available.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

The One Great Hour of Sharing offering will be on March 22, 2009. This special offering helps in funding a wide variety of services and support for people attempting to rebuild their lives after disaster here and abroad.

Please share your financial gifts in this offering so that we can follow in Christ’s example of spreading kindness, compassion and love in the world.

DID YOU KNOW?

The land for our church was a gift of Aristarchus Champion (anyone live in Champion Cree area?) of Rochester, New York, who owned all the land in Montville Twp.  Concerned for the moral and spiritual welfare of settlers in  New Connecticut, he covenanted to give 6 acres of land in the village of Medina if the Rev. Isaac Barnes would come and preach to the Congregationalists of Medina.

MEDITATION – Deb Waldron

O God, always creating, always revealing to us your righteous paths, teach us to delight in your law and guide us in your way of life. We give thanks to you through Jesus the Christ, who came to show us that way. Amen”

The law is God’s sweet word that enlightens us and calls us to account, leading us to be what God has created us to be. It enables us to live together in community while helping others, set apart as God’s people.

The good we do for others makes a difference in their lives. We contribute our energies in ways that benefit people – some known and others unknown to us. By being helpful, we honor the Christ within ourselves and within them.

When we give of ourselves, we are expressing consideration and generosity. Some ways we serve are traditional. Shared relationships and beliefs are honored as family, spiritual, and cultural practices are celebrated. Let us also reflect on additional innovative ways to make a positive difference in the lives of others. We are blessed each time we generously give from the heart.

MEDITATION – Deb Waldron

God is Always Close

Praise to you, God of our salvation. You do not hide your face from us. When we are in trouble, you come near to us. Give us comfort and strength that we may proclaim your goodness and always rejoice in your help. Amen”

As we continue our walk through Lent on our unique spiritual journeys, we may often feel that God is distant, unhearing and unavailable. But, isn’t it in these times when God is the closest, listening intently to our prayers, and most available to help?

The love of God heals, protects, and blesses. The power of divine love is never restricted by

time, space, or circumstance. Knowing no bounds or limitations, love blesses all with goodness and beauty. Even when we are feeling vulnerable or fearful, when we are unsure of our finances or our security, God’s powerful light and love break through. Divine love graces me with its sweet, tender presence.

The love of God heals, protects, and blesses. It comes to in a flash of insight when we are in need of guidance. Walking in nature or sitting quietly in prayer, we feel the love.

“We have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.”–1 John 4:16

Would you like to see that newlywed sparkle return to your marriage?

It’s a chance to look deeply into their relationship with each other and with God. It’s a time to share their feelings, hopes, and dreams with each other. It is not a retreat, marriage clinic, group sensitivity or a substitute for counseling. It’s a unique approach aimed at revitalizing Marriage. This is a time for you and your spouse to be alone together, to rediscover each other and together focus on your relationship for an entire week-end. Every marriage deserves that kind of attention!

Forms are available on the bulletin board in the hall near Fellowship Hall. Please register by March 20th. A 15 minute DVD about ME is available from the Bensons. MEDITATION – Deb Waldron

Teach us your paths, O God, and lead us in your truth. You have been steadfast in your love for us, and merciful in welcoming and sustaining us. Forgive us when we move away from your loving paths, and strengthen us to follow in your way. Amen”

Lent – a time when we become more conscious of our personal, spiritual journeys with God. A short period when we take the time to reflect on what that journey means and how we use it to impact lives around us. It is usually thought of as a time of “giving up” – letting go of cherished habits, vices and indulgences. It can feel like a “wilderness”, devoid of all the color and taste and pleasure of our usual lives.

But, couldn’t it also feel like a beginning? a preparation? Jesus took the time to meditate, pray and prepare before beginning his ministry. He grounded himself in his faith and his father and his love for all God’s children at every point in HIS journey. Couldn’t we do the same?

Think of using this time of Lent to lift up your life’s experiences to God, examine them, and learn to live in God’s ways. Instead of concentrating on what you’re giving UP, you can call upon God to help you in this journey, with the confidence that God’s steadfast and loving relationship with each of us will sustain us, prepare us and motivate us.

FOUNDERS’ DAY THANK YOU

The Endowment Committee wants to thank all of you who came to learn and share about the history of our church last Sunday at THE FOUNDERS’ DAY CELEBRATION.

Now what? What can you do to continue the life and future of our beloved church?

You can explore opportunities in planned giving, and view a gift to the church as a part of your financial planning. A discussion with our attorney, banker, or financial planner will guide your thinking. Please indicate your wishes to Pastor Neal who will answer questions.

A gift from the heart given now will enrich the future life of this church. Make a special contribution to your church by dedicating a financial gift to the Endowment Fund. It will be well cared for and is tax deductible. Please specify such a donation on your check.

We are a growing church…in 1867 the church membership passed the 100 member mark; in 1922, the church membership passed the 900 member mark. It is 2009. We are still nearly 900 members…making us a significant presence in this city for almost 190 years!

Under God’s guiding hand, let’s continue the strength of the Old Brick Church on the square for many years to come!

Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion

The Lenten season begins with the annual Ash Wednesday service. For several years Medina UCC and First Christian have joined together for this worship experience. Medina UCC is hosting the service in our sanctuary this year. Lent is the 40 day period before Easter (not including Sundays). It is an ancient tradition within the church where through prayer and reflection, Christians prepare their hearts and lives to receive the risen Christ on Easter morning. The service is for the whole family. Invite friends and neighbors to join with you in this meaningful service to begin the Lenten season.

Music Under the Stars

BLACK TIE OPTIONAL

SILENT AUCTION

The addition of the Silent Auction/Raffle in 2005 proved to be a successful venture. Creative donations from church members satisfied a variety of interests and values. Basket themes, travel destinations, fine jewelry, art work and gift certificates were just a few of the items offered resulting in $2740.00 toward the all church fundraiser.

We are very excited this year to accept the donation of an exceptional quilt made and hand quilted by our own Medina UCC Quilting Group. These dedicated ladies have been working on this beautiful white on white queen sized quilt for over two years. The quilt will be displayed for you to see. Please notice the exquisite hand work which is a labor of love on this piece of art. Other exciting auction items have been received. Select items will be displayed for sealed bids during Sunday coffee hours in March. If your schedule does not permit you to attend Music Under the Stars you can still take advantage of these auction items and offer your support for the Capital Improvement Fund.

If you have not contacted Dottie Edinger (330-723-6077 or email dotlad@aol.com ) with your donation for this year’s auction/raffle, please do so by March 14, 2009 to assure a listing in the program. Other suggestions could be athletic memberships, Spa gift card, tickets to baseball/football games.

For your convenience, Kelly Charnley, Financial Secretary, is making arrangements to accept MasterCard/Visa for purchase of auction items at Music Under the Stars.

The Significance of Lent

Lent is the fourth season of the Christian year. Its length is the 40 days preceding Easter Day, not counting Sundays. This means Lent always begins on a Wednesday, known as Ash Wednesday.

Lent commemorates Jesus’ fast and temptation in the wilderness of Judea Province, which, according to the Gospel, lasted 40 days. Just as Jesus confronted his temptations during these 40 days, Lent helps Christians focus on our most basic need as sinners: forgiveness.

The only way our Lord’s forgiving power can become effective in our lives is by our taking the initiative to confront our sins, confess them and repent of them. In short, Lent is a season of penitence.

Some Christians fast during Lent. This denial of bodily comforts can help encourage self-reflection about the need for Jesus’ forgiveness.
