COMMUNION
The bread being served during Communion today was baked by the loving hands of our Breadmakers’ Ministry.
”And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body.” Corinthians 10:17
FOOD GATHERING
There is a constant need for canned goods, non-perishable foods and paper products. Please remember to bring items to the church as often as possible and place them in the wooden boxes just inside the north doors. Thanks for your help.
GOOD NEIGHBORS-REVISED!
The much loved and much needed “Good Neighbors” program, to help provide a meal to those UCC members in need, has been renovated! There will no longer be a sign-up list asking for volunteers to provide a meal for a specific week.
Amanda Hover is now coordinating this offering. She is gathering a short list of volunteers that she can contact if a meal is needed and she is not able to provide a meal herself that week.
Please call 330-635-3714 or email thehovers@hotmail.com if you would like to be placed on her list of volunteers for this program so she can contact you directly.
SUPPLY OFFICER NEEDED
Are you interested in volunteering for your church in a job that requires no meetings! Do you like order, systems, and structure? If the answer is yes, we have a job for you! There is a need for one person to be a supply officer. Yes — you will be the person in charge of the supplies (excluding office supplies) that we use every day at the church.
Your job would be to inventory, purchase, order, and coordinate the paper products, the trash bags, paper towels, paper plates, etc., that are stored in 2 locations in the church — downstairs and in the kitchen supply closet. You would report to members of the Building and Grounds Committee. Time involved? Minimal. Your task is to check out needed items and assure their presence for our church family.
Interested? Please contact the church office at 725-4559.
PRAY-A-PSALM
This summer, why not add some depth, rhythm, and light to your personal prayer life? All you need to do is open your Bible to the middle (roughly), find the Psalms, and dive in!
Choose a Psalm (or part of a Psalm) to pray all through the summer weeks, or better yet, allow a Psalm to choose you. Then, experiment with all kinds of ways to pray: read your Psalm on the beach or remember it while walking in the woods, sing your Psalm or make a painting of its imagery.
If you have a meaningful experience with a Psalm this summer, please let Pastor Mariah know by August 16. You will be invited to participate in our Gathering Celebration of the Psalms on Sunday August 28 at 9:00 am. Questions? Contact Pastor Mariah.
DRAINAGE PROJECT TO BEGIN
Building and Grounds intends to complete the foundation drainage and storm water project this summer. Given all the activity in the church the only time we can do this is during the month of August so here is what we expect. The drainage project should be completed in two weeks if everything goes smoothly.
As soon as possible in the first week of August a 5 ft-wide trench will be cut in the driveway from the catch basin to the driveway radius at the courtyard and the door pad at the entrance to HHP will be removed. We will start trenching at the catch basin and move to and around the north and west sides of the building. This should give us the best chance of dealing with any rains that occur during the construction period and enable us to get everything back to normal as soon as possible.
Note: for at least the first two weeks in August the Handicap entrance through HHP will not be usable, the capacity of our parking lot will be limited, and the drive-through feature of our parking lot may not be available.
Also, on the evenings of August 8 – 10 all tile floors will be top scrubbed and waxed as last year. The lower hall and the Community Room will be done on the 9th. The upper hall, Kitchen and Fellowship Hall should be completed on the 10th.
On August 26 (during the day) the carpets in the HHP class rooms, the Foyer, HHP office and nursery will be cleaned, as will the area carpets in Rooms 7, 8, 9/10 and the open area in Room 6.
Clearly there will be a lot going on during August. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during the upheaval.
INDIANS BASEBALL GAME DAY!
SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 @ 7:05
That’s right! We are planning an All Church Baseball Day. If you would like to join us for an evening of baseball, we will be going down to watch the Tribe take on the Twins at Progressive Field
at a 7:05 pm game on August 13. The cost of the tickets will be $12.00.
We will meet at the church at 5:30 pm to car pool to the stadium. Please sign up on the sheets
in the East Room or by Fellowship Hall if you wish to join us or you may contact Crell Johns at
330-725-6809 or email: stloucj@gmail.com. Deadline to sign up is TODAY, Sunday August 7.
MEDITATION Carol Wilcox
Grace
We are all familiar with the hymn “Amazing Grace.” It was written by John Newton, a cruel slave trader;
It has been said that he used the words that were being sung by the crew of rowers on his ship. Amidst a dangerous storm, he called out to God for help.
He later renounced his profession, became a minister, and joined in the fight against slavery, never losing sight of the depths from which he
had been lifted. When he wrote the words,” saved a wretch like me,” he meant them with all his heart. He never lost sight of grace.
In the book, What’s So Amazing About Grace, Christian author and former Editor of Christianity Today writes that repentance, not proper behavior, or even holiness, is the doorway to grace. The ladder of Power reaches up, the ladder of grace reaches down. The opposite of sin is grace, not virtue.
Read: James 4:5-10
John 14-17
Eph. 2: 4-8
Next week: More on grace
